陈豪在北京的ABC美国公司工作，他跟美国同事Amy一起喝下午茶。
(Office ambience)
A：Chen Hao, you`ve been attending a lot of business dinners lately. Didn`t your team go out again last night with the clients?
C：没错。我老板Mr. Brown决定请客人到附近刚开张的那家法国餐馆去吃饭。
A：How did it go?
C：饭菜的味道确实不错，但是有个客人很失态。
A：What do you mean?
C：首先，她点的菜都是菜单上价钱最贵的。
A：What did the others do?
C：其他人点的都是中等价位的，我也一样。
A：This client sounds as if she could use some business etiquette training. Unless Mr. Brown suggested that you all order certain pricey dishes, she should have chosen something moderately priced.
C：我觉得也是。除非主人坚持，否则客人应该点一些普通的菜才对。
A：It`s rude to take advantage of your host like that. This client is not very savvy about business dining.
C： Savvy是什么意思啊？
A：Savvy means having knowledge and experience.
C：这个客户确实不懂礼貌，而且还不只这些呢！
A：Let`s head back to the office now. You can tell me on the way.

C：那个客人不仅点的都是最贵的，而且一道菜都不拉。
A：Like what?
C：从汤开始，然后是头台、沙拉，主菜，最后还有特制的甜点，一样不少。
A：What did everyone else do?
C：Mr. Brown虽然吃得很少，但也只好跟着她一道菜一道菜地点。
A：He was doing the correct thing as host by ordering the same as the client.
C：作为主人，一定要这么做吗？
A：When someone orders appetizers or other dishes in addition to the entrée, it is polite for others to order the same courses.
C：那又是为什么呢？
A：That keeps the pace of the dinner even and avoids the awkwardness of one person eating a course by herself.
C：如果没有别人点汤的话，那个客户自己吃的时候一定会觉得很尴尬。
A：At an informal dinner, some people have soup while others may select a different appetizer to have at the same time. Everyone should have an equal number of courses.
C：那作为请客的主人，在饭桌上能做些什么呢？
A：Simple. The host can say, "Why don`t we all have an appetizer?" Or he could ask, "Would anyone like something to start with?"
C：这样一来，你就能知道自己是不是唯一想点头台的人了。
A：Right. If no one else has a starter course, then you don`t either.
C：你真应该给昨天那个客人好好上一课。
美国习惯用语第452讲
上一次我们讲了三个带有bird这个词的习惯用语。它们是: bird brain。 Bird brain指没头脑、愚蠢的人和early bird special。 Early bird special是给早来顾客的特价优惠。还有strictly for the birds。 Strictly for the birds意思是毫无价值的、荒唐可笑的、令人作呕的。 Bird是个常用词，由bird发展而成的习惯用语也不少。
今天再来学几个。第一个是: bird-dog。 Bird-dog虽然由bird和dog这两个名词组成，中间用连字号联接，但是它却可以作动词用。确实有一种狗叫做bird dog，专门被训练来帮助猎人发现野鸡、鹌鹑之类的飞禽猎物。 Bird dog有特别敏锐的眼力和嗅觉，每当它发现躲藏在树丛草堆里的猎捕对象时，就全神贯注地静止不动，把眼睛鼻子直指向猎物的藏身之处。这一来就引起了猎人的警觉，帮他们发现猎捕对象。这可能就是bird-dog这个习惯用语的出典。
按字典的说法，大约在1930年前后， bird dog这个词组成为习惯用语，用来指被委派观察某一活动以便随时发现问题的人。这时bird dog当然是个名词词组。这个名词词组中间加上连字号就变成动词了，常用来表达严密监视、密切注意、搜索情况的意思。
我们听个例子。一家小公司的经理要来告诉我们经过一番辛苦拼搏，他那摇摇欲坠的生意终于有了转机；他们争取到一家大公司为期五年的承包合同。这可是个让他的企业起死回生的关键项目，不能出丝毫差错。我们听听他采取了什么防范措施。他要求自己最信得过的职员Joe做什么?
例句-1：I want to make sure we do a good job. So I`m asking Joe here to bird-dog the whole project and catch any trouble. If he sees any， he`ll report it directly to me.
他说：我要确保我们做好这项工作，所以我委派Joe严密监促整个项目，查找任何问题。他一旦发现差错，就会直接向我汇报。
这段话里的bird-dog含义是严密监督、仔细查找问题。

再学个带有bird这个词的习惯用语: the birds and bees。 Bee是蜜蜂。习惯用语the birds and bees已经有一百五十来年的历史了，人们用the birds and bees委婉地表示人的生殖繁育和性活动，以避免难以启齿的窘迫境地。
它的来源可能是这样的。许多父母常常试图用鸟类和蜜蜂的繁殖活动来比喻人类如何生儿育女，以便向孩子解释爸妈是怎么会有他们的。问题在于鸟儿和蜜蜂的繁殖行为跟人类大不相同，所以实在难以借用这个来说清楚男女间的性关系。我们听一个人来说说自己十岁时的一段经历。
例句-2：Dad got all red in the face telling me about the birds and bees. And it only mixed me up - I had to learn about girls from friends my age who didn`t know much more than me.
他说：爸爸试着借用比喻迂回委婉地向我说明人类的生殖活动，直讲得满脸通红，可还是让我困惑不解，于是我不得不找同年龄的伙伴去了解女孩究竟是怎么回事，而我的小伙伴也并不比我懂多少。
这里的习惯用语the birds and bees是对人类的生殖繁育活动所作的迂回委婉的解释。

其实由bird这个词发展而来的习惯用语还有不少。不知大家是否记得我们以前学过的一个习惯用: sit in the catbird seat。 Catbird是美国和澳洲特有的一种大鸟。由于鸣声像猫叫而得到这个名称。它专门把窝筑在大树高高的顶端以避免遭受侵犯和其它各种威胁。所以sit in the catbird seat意思是处境安稳, 可以高枕无忧了。
