CH:Hi Amy,
A:I received one, too.
C:你去吗?
A:Of course. Aren"t you?
A:Why not? It"s going to be a nice party at an upscale restaurant.
A:I"m afraid that doesn"t matter. Part of the reason for inviting everyone is to build rapport among all of us who work together.
C:Rapport
A:Rapport means building relationships between people, establishing trust and mutual understanding.
A:Attendance at the office party is a part of your job. To go or not to go is not a choice. The boss expects you to be there.
A:It better be something important for you to forego the office party and risk offending the boss.
A:Well, CH, did you decide to go to the party?
A:I hate to tell you this, but that would not be acceptable.
A:Unless your invitation says "and guest, " it would be poor etiquette to take someone with you.
A:That"s not going to work either. This is a seated dinner party so you have stay the entire time.
A:You must stay until our host, the boss, stands to indicate that dinner is over. Then good manners dictate you don"t leave before your thank him for the evening and tell him good-bye.
A:Just a word of caution. If you drink alcoholic beverages, do it in moderation. Some people forget that rule and overdo it. Not only is it embarrassing, you could jeopardize your job.
A:Attendance is required. Read your invitation carefully so you know what the occasion is and if guests are included.
A:That"s right. Don"t forget to say your good-byes. And go easy on the alcohol.
(Office ambience)
CH:Hi Amy, how are you?
A:I"m fine.
A:As a matter of fact there is. I consider you a good friend as well as colleague. You know I have tried to help you as much as I can since you came to work at ABC.
A:Unfortunately we have a problem right now. As we say in the United States, "I have a bone to pick with you".
C:"A bone to pick with me?"
A:It means that I have a complaint about something that involves you.
A:Forgive me - I may be wrong, but I think you used my office while I was away last week.
A:I would not have minded if you had asked me first.
A:I understand, but you need to be aware that you shouldn"t make yourself at home in someone else"s office without first asking permission.
A:We will have to continue this later. I have a meeting in five minutes.
******
A:Chen Hao, you deserve to know what bothered me about your using my office without asking me first. You were not very considerate in some of the things you did.
A:It appears that you ate your lunch in my office.
A:There were crumbs all over my desk.
A:And how do you explain the missing paper clips? I was down to my last few, and when I came back, there weren"t any left.
A:And that means that you went through my desk to find them.
A:Well, it"s not. Even with good friends. Just because people are not at their desk, doesn"t mean that you can make your self at home when they are not there.
A:I accept your apology. In the future remember to ask permission before you use a coworker"s desk, office equipment or supplies. When you do receive permission, leave everything as you found it.
(Office ambience)
A:I"m glad he is not around. I don"t know what he did, but you need to calm down before you talk to him.
C:冷静?
A:When we are angry, we say things that we don"t necessarily mean; but we can"t retract them after they are said.
A:Remember, you are going to have to work with him for a long time unless you plan to leave. If you chew him out now, you will have a difficult, if not impossible, time, rebuilding your relationship. Now tell me what the problem is.
A:So you agreed?
A:I understand why you are upset, and rightfully so. I still suggest that you take time to calm yourself and then plan when and how you will confront him. You can"t simply run him down in the hall and have it out.
A:It will only make matters worse. Let"s talk after work today and try to avoid Marshall in the meantime.
******
A:Chen Hao, how are you feeling now? Still angry?
A:May I suggest that you choose a time and place to talk to him?
A:First of all, don"t interrupt him when he is working. If the time is not right for him, he may resent your interruption and won"t be agreeable to hearing you out.
A:Choose a place to meet with him where others cannot overhear your conversation. This issue is between you two, so keep it private. You don"t want to expose your problem to office gossip or draw anyone else in.
A:This will not be the time to take up all sorts of issues with him. Stay focused on what is bothering you now. Otherwise, he will just think that you are whining.
C:Amy,
A:First, take time to calm down. Select a private spot to talk. Plan what you will say and know what you want the outcome to be.
C:谢谢你,Amy.
