(Office ambience)
A: 陈豪,do you have any plans for the weekend?
I am a little nervous.
A:What are you nervous about?
A: Do you have gift for your hosts?
A:Here"s what I do. I take a gift with me when I know my hosts" taste and hobbies.
A:When I don"t have a clue, I pay attention to what they like while I am there. Then I send a special gift after the visit.
A: Unless you have food allergies or need to follow a special diet that would be rude. The rule is to "make do".
A: If there is something you don"t like, don"t let your hosts know. Have a little bit of everything to be polite but fill up on the things you like.
Amy, can I take my dog Freckles?
Unless they invite Freckles, ask your neighbors if they could look after him.
A:They may ask if you want to watch television and if you have any favorite shows.
A:I hate to disappoint you, but if your hosts go to bed, you should retire to your room.
A:Take something to read. It"s much more courteous to read quietly in your room than to stay up with the televising blaring.
******
C:Amy,
A:Don"t forget when the visit is over to send a handwritten thank you note?
E-mail is too impersonal.
A:Then buy some and take it with you along with a pen and some stamps. You can write the note before you leave their house and mail it on your way back home.
A:没错。
(Office ambience)
A:陈豪,Do you have a few minutes to talk?
C:Sure,
A:I noticed something in our meeting just now. It has to do with good etiquette.
A: It has to do with body language, specifically eye contact.
A:We send nonverbal messages with our arms, our legs, our posture, our gestures and most often with our eyes.
A:没错。比方说,今天开会时,your eyes said more than your words or your facial expression.
A: You didn"t have to. You rolled your eyes.
You were not aware, but several people at the meeting noticed.
Was there anything else that I did with my eyes?
A:Unfortunately, yes. You looked away several times while Todd was speaking.
A:没错。By not looking at Todd, you gave the impression that you had heard it all before and were not the least bit interested in hearing more.
A:Well, your eyes did that for you.
C: Amy,
A:When you lost complete interest in what Todd was saying, you just stared at him blankly. It was that old "deer in the headlights" look.
A:For the deer facing the headlights of an oncoming car, its expression is one of looking, but not seeing.
A:That"s right. The courteous professional is as conscious of his body language as he is his spoken language.
Learning to control the message that your eyes send is the key to courteous communication.
(Office ambience)
C:Hi, Amy.
A:Of course, what about?
C: Table manners.
A: So you are having trouble figuring out the correct way to eat Western style?
A:Well, for one thing, there are only two correct styles of eating that the Americans use, but some people eat however it suits them.
A: 你要是想成功,还是应该注意饭桌上的规矩,because how you handle getting food to your mouth is a big part of your professional image.
A:The two correct styles of eating are the American and the Continental style.
A:Better yet, let"s go to the New York Grill after work and practice in an authentic American restaurant.
******
C:Amy,
A:With the American style, you hold the fork in your left hand and the knife in your right hand to cut your meat or vegetables.
A:Then you place the knife on the top of your plate with the blade facing in. Next you transfer the fork to your right hand.
A:Now with the fork in your right hand, you take the food to your mouth with the fork tines up.
C:Tines
A:Times
The difference is that you keep the fork in your left hand to take the food to your mouth but with the tines down.
What do I do with my knife?
A:You can continue to hold it in your right hand since you aren"t switching the fork over. Just keep it close to your plate.
A:没错。Food is cut the same way for both American and Continental styles, fork in the left hand and knife in the right hand.
Amy.
C:Amy,
A:Sure,
A:How does that make you feel?
